Events: Sky Viewing

Our observatory, housed under a 4-m dome, is located in SE-434. The observations are done with a Celestron CG-11 optical system. We have the following accessories: a Losmandy Gemini Computer for deep sky objects, solar filter to view sunspots, spectroscopic filter, ccd camera and a hydrogen-alpha filter to enable us to see "real time" prominences in the middle layer of the solar atmosphere (the chromosphere).

Websites used in conjuction with the observations include SOHO (solar and heliospheric observatory) and SEDS (students for the exploration and development of space). Ph.D. Physics.

We have expanded our viewing hours to better accomodate the increasing student enrollment.

Tuesday and Wednesday 11.00am-1.00pm for solar observations.

Monday and Thursday 8.00-10.00pm for general viewings.

Or by appointment.

We welcome students, faculty, staff and members of the general public. On cloudy evenings we plan lectures, video presentations, slide shows, etc. For more details please contact Eric Vandernoot at (561)297-3378 during normal working hours.

We thank Jim Disiena for starting these sessions.

On Nov. 8th, 2006 the observatory will be open to show live the transit of Mercury across the face of the Sun. The transit begins at 2 pm and will continue on into dusk. Explanations to such events and their historical importance will be provided. So come by and see little Mercury eclipse the Sun!
