Graduate Admissions
The Department of Physics at Florida Atlantic University
offers programs of study leading to Master of Science (M.S.)
and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Physics. The
Physics Department offers Teaching Assistantships to Graduate
Students on a competitive basis. Almost all our students have
one. For students enrolled in the Ph. D. program, they
amount to about $20,000 a year. The application to our
Graduate Programs follows two steps:
- Step 1: Application and Evaluation from the Physics Department
The Physics Admissions committee will review the applicant's documents on a preliminary basis to assess the chances of acceptance of the Candidate. This first step is rather expedient and free; no application fees are necessary. The Physics Department will then inform the Candidate whether it is in a position to recommend the application for acceptance to FAU's Graduate College or not.
This procedure does not preclude the applicant from formally completing a graduate application to Florida Atlantic University. If the applicant receives a favorable recommendation of acceptance from the Physics Department, the applicant should then proceed to follow the formal application process described in Step 2.
In order to do this Preliminary Evaluation, we
need:
This preliminary application
form.
Copy of your Undergraduate (and Graduate if available) Transcripts. The transcripts have to be translated to English. However, a Professional Evaluation is not necessary at this time. If applicants are recommended for acceptance, a professional credential evaluation will then be required. A photocopy with a legible translation is enough.
Copy of your Degree Diploma. Also with translation to
English.
Copy of your GRE scores (General only; Subject test is not required)
This does not need to be an original from ETS. A photocopy of your
personal copy will do fine.
Copy of your TOEFL score (International Students). This does
not need to be an original. A photocopy of your
personal copy will do fine.
Three letters of recommendation.
These documents can be sent in the following manners:
Mail the package to:
Chair, Graduate Student Selection Committee
Florida Atlantic University
Department of Physics
777 Glades Rd.
Boca Raton, FL 33431, USA
Fax to (561)297-2662
Scan and email the files (in any format) to
admissions@physics.fau.edu
The deadlines for this step are
July 1 for domestic applicants and
Feb 15 for international applicants.
- Step 2: Official Application to FAU's Office of Graduate Admission
Based on our preliminary evaluation, and if you are recommended for acceptance into the program, you should then proceed with completing the on-line Graduate College application. The complete application instructions, as well as the application itself, can be found at http://www.fau.edu/graduate/. There you will find a list of all application requirements. The FAU Graduate College will send the final admissions decision.
